Charity Week 07!

Asalamu Alaikum !

The MUCH anticipated Charity Week for Orphans starts 22nd-28th October 2007, which is NEXT WEEK :O

For those of you who have zero observation skills & therefore missed the millions of CW posters around campus, a little background:

The aim of CW is to unite with other students around London to make a difference to orphans worldwide. Money goes towards organising fun days for orphans in Palestine, educational facilities in Indonesia & India, helping orphans in Kenya, Somalia, Kashmir, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, etc.

Lets face it. Most fundraising is generally repetitive, cumbersome, & focuses on making people feel rubbish about themselves for being so tight whilst orphans around the world are suffering. But CW is different! CW is cool & FUN.

Key word: FUN …When’s the last time you had FUN? …Was it during that essay you wrote? Or that tedious reading you did? or during ‘labs’? CW gives u the chance to have FUN whilst helping an orphan. If CW were a car it would be a Porshe 911 Turbo GT. Tell me, who wouldn’t want to be associated with that??

We’ll be competing with all other participating unis/ colleges/ schools.

Also starring in CW this year:

‘KCL Arch-rivals UCL’

‘LSE – notoriously went down in history for gatecrashing & trashing KCLs english dept in 2006’

‘SGUL – also known as ‘Medics United FC’

‘City – their CW motto = “KCL must be destroyed”…last year they took our bucket, this year they want a whole lot more’

‘SOAS – sick of their happy-clappy-we-love-everyone reputation’

‘Mulberry School for Girls – never underestimate the power of small girls in large groups – dangerously good at burying the competition by raising extortionate amounts of money’

At the end of CW the annual ULU dinner will take place and, despite the aforementioned contestants, KCL will be crowned the winner inshaAllah, because we’re just blatantly the best.

The activities we have lined up in CW include:

Sumo wrestling (for women): …we have the suits…we have the venue…but do any of you wimps dare take part?? Show everyone what your made of. Separate the Champs from the Chumps. Bring out the Rikishi in you. Taking place: Tuesday 23rd October in Waterloo Prayer room; 12-8pm

Arm wrestling for bros: Separate the strong from the weak, the weak from the hopeless, and the hopeless from the even-my-baby-sister-can-beat-me-to-a-pulp. Find out who you never want to get into a fight with & who needs to hit the gym ASAP. Taking place in Waterloo prayer room & Strand. Contact individual campus reps for info on day & time (rep contact info at the end of email). GKT arm-wrestling on Monday (contact rep for time)

Biryani eathathon – eat your way to victory. Gain a few ‘pounds’ (both in weight & monetary terms) in the process. Taking place: Tuesday 23rd October in MR3 (Boland House) Guy’s Campus, 1-4pm

Street/ Tube collections – your chance to harass londoners for money! …jokes aside, we actually raise a lot of money through street/ tube collections – you’d be suprised how much people donate. Get signing up for this. Wednesday 24th = Tube Collections; Saturday 27th = Street collections

Eid Dinner: Because we like to eat. Because we don’t want eid to be over. Because we want an excuse to wear nice clothes. Tickets are £14 for a lovely meal in a restaurant (£5 out of this goes to charity). Taking Place: Thursday 24th October in Cliftons Restaurant (Brick Lane). Contact individual campus CW reps for tickets.

Sponsorships – sponsor these brave sisters doing a bungee jump:

Some other sisters are walking London’s 7 bridges to raise 7K!! That’s a mission, particularly since most of us (i.e. me) can’t even walk across Waterloo bridge when going to Strand & therefore get a bus…lets help these girls by sponsoring them:

WII competition: self-explanatory…taking place in Waterloo, GKT & Strand campus. Contact individual campus reps for info on day & time.

Sponsored lunghi/ freshy day (brothers) this is a day where brothers make complete fools out of themselves by wearing a lunghi & get ppl to sponsor them for doing so! A lunghi is worn by males in South Asia. This is what a lunghi looks like:

…Wear a lunghi for a day to raise money for the sake of Allah. Wear robes of silk & gold for all eternity in the hereafter inshaAllah. Taking place during Saturday 27th October street collections.

Other sponsorship ideas: shave your head, dye/ spray paint your beard (if u have one!), sponsored run, ps2 or 3/ xbox/ footy tournament

Stalls: stalls doing henna & selling all kinds of goodies for guys and gals will be in:

Macadam Building (Strand SU) & Strand prayer room, Waterloo (1st floor outside cafeteria) & The Spit (Guy’s campus); 11am-3pm. If you have new items you wana donate to sell on stalls, bring them in. Also, we need people to man the stalls, help out!

Jum’ah collections: don’t just pass the bucket brothers, throw a couple of quids in it! Brothers are also needed for Jum’ah collections at Mosques, volunteer yourself, contact Waterloo/ GKT br. reps for more info.

Make and sell stuff: …Remember when you were a kid & truly appreciated the simple yet beautiful pleasures of life? – like putting all your hard work and time into something you made out of scratch, then appreciating it’s beauty and the personal connection you had with it? Here is your chance to bring back that creative side. Make calligraphy/ artwork which can be sold at the CHARITY AUCTION taking place at the Eid dinner.

So that’s pretty much all the main stuff about CW. Please contact individual campus reps if there is anything you want to help out with/ donate/ get sponsored/ participate in.

Remember that a few people trying to fundraise makes this whole job 100x more difficult than necessary. Whereas a huge bunch of people fundraising lightens the burden immensely.

Everyone, regardless of race or religion, can participate in CW. Please don’t let this opportunity pass. I leave you with the Divine words of the Almighty Allah (swt):

“Who is he that will loan to Allah a beautiful loan, which Allah will double unto His credit and multiply many times? It is Allah that giveth (you) Want or plenty, and to Him shall be your return.” (2:245)
